Effective on the October 1, 2003, AFSOC welcomed the movement of the USAF's continental U.S.-based rescue forces from ACC. With this move, the command inherited the 347th RQW and 563rd RQG, while also gaining oversight responsibilities for the 920th RQW (AFRC) and the Air National Guard’s 106th and 129th RQW. Historically the ANG Wings has maintenance and PJ’s assigned to them, however as part of AFSOC’s re-organisation of the Wings, these three roles were split into three new Squadrons for each wing. The 106th RQS would have the 101st RQS operating the HH-60G, 102nd RQS operating HC-130J’s and the 103rd RQS with the PJ’s. The 129th would split to have the 129th RQS operating the Pavehawk, the 130th flying HC-130J’s and the 131st RQS with the PJ’s.
The 176th Wing in Alaska, who wasn’t controlled by AFSOC made a similar split with its three Squadrons becoming the, 210th RQS operating the Pavehawk, the 211th RQS operating the HC-130J’s and finally the 212th RQS having PJ’s assigned.
Therefore, on October 8, 2004, the 103rd Rescue Squadron was established at Francis S. Gabreski ANGB and assigned to the 106th OG.
