USAF / 56th RQS / Aviano AB / HH-60G / Jolly Green Giant

56th Rescue Squadron
Aviano AB, Italy
OCP colour
2018

This patch was made in spring 2018 for the move from RAF Lakenheath to Aviano, & crews were seen wearing them at both bases. The picture of a crewman wearing one was taken at Aviano with the delivery of the first HH-60G. Not an easy patch to find & a great variation to the PVC patches.

early 2019
This patch was the first jolly green giant patch made after the move from RAF Lakenheath to Aviano AB, and was made just after the black PVC patches that were made for the squadron. This dates from early 2019, and is slightly odd as it doesn't have any face detail. Often mistaken for a Lakenheath patch but definitely from the Italian base. Seen in the photo being worn in early 2022.
Partly embroidered on twill with a merrowed edge, backed with hook & loop with the Giant in Dexter.

This patch is a new colour version manufactured by Aviation Gear in 2019 and was purchased from Flightline Insignia.  It was the first colour patch that was worn when the Squadron was fully based at Aviano.
Fully embroidered with a merrowed edge, backed with hook & loop with the Giant in Dexter.

2022
This patch was manufactured in 2022 & was worn & obtained directly from the Squadron. This was worn when the Squadron was operating HH-60G's from Aviano and the picture above shows it being still worn in March 2024. This variation differs as the JOLLY GREEN is edged in black embroidery & the flag orientation has been changed.

This patch was made by the Squadron in 2021, & is deceptively small compared to the normal size Jolly Green Giant shield.

56th Rescue Squadron
Papa AB, Hungary
Jolly Vihar 2022
Full Colour
2022
(Hungarian Air Force/Sgt. Georgina Cser Csigine)
Manufactured by Aviation Gear during the summer of 2022. This was made for a deployment of three HH-60G’s to Hungary during August 2022 for Vihar 2022. The deployment was to give the gunners experience in shooting plus the pilots experience with the local JTAC's. The Jolly Green Giant is wearing a traditional Hungarian bocskai military hat named after . Istvan Bocskai who led a rebellion against the Habsdurg empire between 10
604 to 1606. The Pavehawks were based at Papa Air Base & used the range at Bakony, near Varpalota for a live fire exercise along with local JTACS. The patch can also be seen worn during the exercise.
Fully embroidered with a heat cut selvedge edge, backed with hook & loop with the Giant in Dexter.
Seen being worn by a crewman, this is a generic patch that this crewman wore during Jolly Vihar 2022. This is one of 60 made in total, by a US company called Two to Fly. The leather was made by the Bald Bros & each one was hand sewn & hand painted.
