Fallen Star Heros /Arris 01 / 6594th Test Group/ HH-53

15 January 1985
Arris 01
6594th Test Group
HH-53 #

On the 15 January 1985 Arris 01 crashed onto the deck of a commercial ship the "Asian Beauty" 544 miles northwest of Honolulu, while trying to rescue an unwell crewman. Captain Mason had just returned from his honeymoon and had volunteered for the flight.
This crash was the final straw in the question surrounding the main rotor blades as the Super Jolly Green Giants weren't fitted with titanium spar & composite blades as were fitted to the CH-53E's. These improved blades reduced accidents & led to less MRB's being changed in the field.
