USAF / 55th RQS / HH-60G / Jolly Green Giant

55th Rescue Squadron
Davis-Monthan AFB
Full Colour
2003
This patch is easy to date as the squadron was activated as a Rescue Squadron at Davis-Monthan in March 2003, after previously being a ARRS & SOS unit.
Partly embroidered on twill with a merrowed edge with the giant in Dexter.

Desert Subdued Colour
c.2013
Not much is known about this patch, however with all of the deployments to Afghanistan & Iraq it would be a good educated guess that this is what it was used for. Acquired during c.2013.
Partly embroidered on twill with a merrowed edge with the giant in Dexter.

The 55th RQS's Jolly Green Giant is one you don't want to mess with. This Giant sits in the 55th RQS Operations building at Davis-Monthan, & sports the colours of the Squadron,  maroon & silver.

Friday Night Patch (1st version)
Davis-Monthan AFB
Maroon Colour
2019
This patch was made in 2018, and was sold by the crew at the air show in 2019 & was the first version of the maroon coloured patch. This was made as a Friday patch & the maroon colour as this is the Squadrons coloured. This patch was kindly donated from a crewman who flew with the patch.
Partly embroidered on twill with a merrowed edge, backed with hook & loop with the giant in Dexter.

Friday Night Patch (2nd Version)
Davis-Monthan AFB
Maroon Colour
2021
This patch is one from early 2021 & is the second version of the maroon coloured Squadron patch & was worn as a Friday patch.
This variation is fully embroidered, as the earlier version was embroidered on twill. It has a merrowed edge, backed with hook & loop with the giant in Dexter.

Members from the 55th RQS were recognized as the most combat ready helicopter unit, ready to deploy wherever and whenever by deploying to a far range, open-ocean rescue mission requiring six aerial refuellings in treacherous weather conditions resulting in one sailor being saved.
The 55th RQS credited their award to their team members, as well as all of the behind the scenes members who make all of the rescue missions happen.
“There is no way we could do it without all of our support folks like the maintainers and all of the people who deal with the paperwork,” said Senior Master Sgt. Brian Yorke, 55th RQS senior enlisted leader. “Support from the 355th Wing helps us push the tactical edge, which is what Night Hawks do.”

This version was made by Rama World from California in the autumn of 2021 for the Squadron & is one of the first designs Rama have done with a Jolly Green Giant. It was also sold at the Davis-Monthan Air show in November 2021. Its another Friday/Morale patch with the Squadrons colour of maroon being used, this being the third variation of the patch that has been made. This can be obtained off Rama or Flightline Insignia. Seen being worn by a crewman in late 2022 (see picture above).
Fully embroidered with a merrowed edge, backed with hook & loop & the Giant in Dexter.

This is a LPA patch made in 2018. Its not known by me the reason behind the design around the upside down drinking from the beer keg, apart from getting drunk.
If you have one of these patches you'd be willing to sell, trade or donate, please get in touch, I'd love to hear from you.

If you have any additional information about this patch please contact me & I´ll get back to you.
